Dracut, Massachusetts is home to many workers who are just trying to get by. People working in many industries are living paycheck to paycheck while trying to make a better life for their families and children. While sometimes life can be a struggle, most would prefer it to being unable to work. Most people in a hardworking town like Dracut would prefer to be self-reliant than having to rely on others.
Unfortunately, many people, including in Dracut, find themselves unable to work because of a disability of one kind or another. Whether it’s a physical injury or mental impairment, work just isn’t an option, no matter how badly you want it. Some people always forget that in order to get a job, there needs to be a job available in your local town or community. If there are jobs available, but the employers won’t hire you because of your disability, you’re still going to be unable to pay your bills. For these situations, Social Security Disability is there to help.
Social Security Disability is what is commonly referred to as two separate programs for disabled adults and children. The first is called Social Security Disability Insurance, commonly known as SSDI. This is insurance that workers pay for when taxes are taken out of their paycheck every week. In order to be eligible, you have to be disabled, whether due to a physical impairment such as a back injury, a heart condition, or pulmonary issues, or mental impairment such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD. You also need to have enough of a work history where you’ve paid enough into the system to get benefits for your disability.
The second program is called Supplemental Security Income, commonly known as SSI. This is a supplemental cash assistance program for those who are disabled, destitute, and unable to meet basic needs. For this program, you still need to be disabled. But, you don’t need to have any sort of work history. The only other requirement is that there is a limit on how much assets you can have. While you are allowed to own a home or car, you cannot have significant money in the bank in order to be eligible for SSI.
