Tenacious.
Compassionate.
A car is usually about fifteen feet long, and it will weigh about 3,000 pounds. This makes them hard to miss. Whether you’re on the highway or in your neighborhood, a car is easy to see if you’re paying attention. Motorcycles don’t have that same luxury. At six feet long and 400 pounds, a motorcycle is much smaller than a car, suv, or truck. This makes it more difficult to see.
Drivers are supposed to be aware of their surroundings. This includes not only vehicles, but also pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles. Unfortunately, many drivers don’t pay enough attention and they don’t see motorcycles. This can cause catastrophic injuries
There are many situations where motorcycle visibility can be an issue
When a driver approaches an intersection, he/she is supposed to take enough time to see all that can be seen. Drivers must look left, look right, and then look left again before entering the intersection. They must also take enough time when looking to see everything. A quick glance can be deadly.
A driver who enters an intersection in the path of a motorcycle can cause an accident in multiple ways. Of course, the car can strike the motorcycle. This can cause the biker to become airborne and fly into the hard pavement. Another thing that can happen is that the biker may take evasive action to avoid the vehicle. This can also cause injury if the bike is driven off the road or if the biker ditches the bike.
When we go to drivers education, we understand that there are always visibility limitations no matter what kind of car, truck or suv you’re driving. We’re taught that every vehicle has a bind spot, and we can’t always rely on what we see in our mirrors, especially on the highway.
When a biker travels on the highway, he/she puts his/her trust in the other vehicles on the road that they’ll pay attention and drive safely. A driver who doesn’t look for motorcycles in his/her blindspot can cause catastrophic injuries. If a vehicle tries to merge into another lane where a motorcycle is driving, the biker will have to take evasive action to make sure he/she doesn’t get struck. If the highway is crowded, taking evasive action can be much more difficult.
Whether a motorcycle is struck by another car or the vehicle causes the biker to lose control, bikers are often killed in highway accidents. Even if the biker is wearing protective gear and a helmet, human bodies are not meant to withstand a bike crash at 65 miles per hour.
An experienced motorcycle accident attorney knows that motorcycles are not always treated fairly. People don’t see them, and when they do, they aren’t given the level of protection that they need. Even when a motorcyclist is seriously injured or killed, there are many pitfalls to making a claim for the compensation you deserve.
At Marcotte Law Firm, we’ve represented many motorcyclists who have sustained a wide range of injuries. Whether the accident caused a broken bone or the loss of a life, we know how to get you the compensation you deserve.
