Distracted Teen Driving

Distracted driving is an epidemic across the country. However, there are some groups of people who are distracted more often. Similarly, there are some groups of people who are more susceptible to making an error while driving distracted. Both of these descriptions apply to many Teen Drivers. Given the serious injuries that often result from distracted driving, there should be a strong focus not only on getting compensation for the victims, but also for preventing these kids of accidents in the first place.

Additional Requirements for Teen Drivers

Because teens are often distracted behind the wheel, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has imposed restrictions on teen drivers under the age of 19. Teens who want a license must:

  • Complete a Driver’s Education course that includes both classroom and road instruction.
  • Have at least 30 additional hours of driving instruction beyond a Drivers Education Course.

Then when they receive their license, there are added restrictions, including:

  • For the first six months, a teen driver cannot have a passenger under the age of 18 without a chaperone.
  • Teen drivers cannot get behind the wheel between 12:30 AM and 5:00 AM without a chaperone.
  • Except to report an emergency, teens behind the wheel cannot use a cell phone or other electronic device for any purpose.

Teens Still Drive Distracted

Even when there are rules in place, teens still become distracted. Sometimes they’re distracted by things that aren’t prohibited by law, such as a radio or dashboard entertainment system. Other times teen drivers break the law by having their friends in the car or using a cell phone. This can cause an accident because these teen drivers don’t have enough experience behind the wheel to properly confront emergency situations. Distracted teen drivers are a ticking time bomb.

Serious Injuries Can Be Caused by a Distracted Teen Driver

The injuries caused by Distracted Teen Drivers can be serious. This is especially true if the accident happens at high speed. Teens often speed and travel faster than conditions safely allow. The higher the speed of the car, the more at risk that the people in the car will be seriously injured in a crash. These collisions caused by Distracted Teen Drivers cause many types of injuries, including:
