Woburn, Massachusetts has turned into a hub of legal services in Middlesex County. After spending many years in Cambridge, Middlesex Superior Court moved almost all of its work to Woburn in 2008. Except for two courtrooms in Lowell Superior Court (one civil courtand one criminal court), all Superior Court business in Middlesex County was done in Woburn. So, if you have a case in Middlesex County that is significant enough to find itself in Superior Court, odds are that you will find yourself in Woburn.
Woburn HistoryIncorporated in 1642, Woburn has a rich history. It was originally settled as an agricultural town. Woburn encompassed parts of neighboring communities including Burlington, Winchester, Reading, and Stoneham. However, by 1850, those towns had incorporated separately. During that time, the addition of railroad access allowed Woburn to expand into the rubber and leather industry. However by the 1920s, those industries faded due to the Great Depression, among other reasons.
Today, Woburn has a mix of residential and commercial properties. It has also retained much of its land for conservation purposes, including many areas that are open to the public.
Middlesex Superior Court in WoburnIn 2008, the Superior Court in Woburn opened to much fanfare. It was a state of the art facility, even though it was built in just twelve months. It includes talking elevators and telecommunication systems to allow for cutting edge trial work. The structure is 140,000 and contains approximately 200 Court Employees.
This was a great development just for ease of access. Before 2008, almost all litigants had to go to Cambridge to go to Court. With Middlesex County being one of the larger counties, many people from towns across the northern part of the county would have to fight traffic to make it to Cambridge. This could mean not only that litigants would have to dedicate an entire day for a 15 minute court hearing, but also that your lawyer would have to charge you for multiple hours sitting in traffic.
